What to Do When You Need Your Car Towed

Feb 20, 2023

According to Road & Travel Magazine, more than $60 billion of auto maintenance is left undone yearly. If you put off maintenance for too long, you could run into car trouble when you're on the road. Don't panic if you need a tow! Call a car towing service and follow these tips.

Move to a Safe Location

Leaving your car on a busy road can be dangerous. If possible, before you call for a tow, move your vehicle to the side of the road. You may want to turn your hazard lights on so that other drivers can spot your vehicle from a distance.

Document the Damage

Whether you've been in an accident or your car has broken down, you should take plenty of photos before your vehicle is towed away. Images can be valuable evidence, especially when you file an insurance claim. Try to get pictures from as many angles as possible. You should consider taking some video footage as well.

Remove Valuables From Your Vehicle

Make sure you remove important items from your vehicle before it's towed away. Check the front and backseat for items you'll need, like your cell phone, sunglasses, or any electronics you keep in your car. Don't forget to grab your vehicle's registration and other important documents from your glove compartment.

Tell the Car Towing Service Where to Take Your Vehicle

When the towing company arrives, take a few minutes to talk to them about your vehicle. Tell them why your vehicle is being towed and where you want it towed. You can request that your vehicle is towed to a specific auto shop or repair facility. Make sure that you know where your vehicle is being taken.

Look Over the Paperwork Closely

Before your vehicle is towed away, you may be asked to sign an invoice or other paperwork. Even if you're in a hurry, it's important to look over these documents before you add your signature. Let the company know if you spot any mistakes. If it's dark outside and difficult to read the paperwork, use the flashlight on your cell phone.

Having your car towed can be stressful, but it's the safest option in many cases. Instead of driving a car that needs repairs, you can have a car towing service transport your vehicle to an auto repair shop that you trust! Contact our team at Don's Towing and Repair, Inc if your car needs a tow!
